Vacation Part 2

Day 3 of our trip- We headed to Yorktown to see where revolutionary war was won.

We arrived at the Battlefields right when the National Park opened at 9 a.m. then had to wait around a while for the first tour of the day. While waiting, we went through the small museum in the visitors center where they had George Washingtons' actual sleeping and dining tent! That was amazing to see!

The park Ranger doing our tour did a great job making history come alive for us! It was amazing to walk the ground the soldiers once walked and stand next to the berms they made. The soldiers made the earth mounds by making circular baskets like the one my kids are standing next to and fill them with dirt. They made hundreds of these and the mounds of earth are still spotted throughout the battlefield. I can't even imagine all the work and man hours that went into building them all!

Next, we took a driving tour of the battle grounds. We had bought a CD in the gift shop that gave a lot of information about each of the stops along the way. The tour ended in the Moore House where British and American representatives hammered out the details of the British surrender.

This was our first attempt at getting a family picture for our Christmas card. We asked a very nice man to take our picture, and where it is a good picture of each of us, the cannon was cropped out of the picture and we were wearing our green tour stickers. For those of you who have recieved our card, we took that picture during our driving tour of the battle fields. Lucky for us, a local boy scout had made some wooden benches for the public to enjoy and I was able to snap a picture of us using the self timer.

This is a favorite picture from our trip to Virginia! It sure shows off the beauty of the fall leaves and beautiful landscapes.

Blogger seems to be giving me grief and not letting me upload pictures from the second half of the day, so I'll have to break up this post :)
